It’s Halushki Weather

Also called haluska and haluski, halushki is a simple fried cabbage and onions with noodles dish that arrived in America along with the immigrants from central and eastern Europe whose descendants still enjoy it as comfort food. I make it the way my mother taught me and I hope you enjoy it. It can be eaten as a lunch or dinner and can be served with plant-based sausage as well.

  • 1 medium head of cabbage
  • 1 onion
  • 1/2 bag noodles
  • 1/4 cup butter or olive oil
  • Salt, pepper to taste

  1. Cook the noodles according to the directions on the package
  2. Chop up onions and cabbage, but keep each in their own bowl
  3. Melt the butter, or heat the oil, over medium-high heat
  4. Saute onions until translucent
  5. Add cabbage and cook both veggies down until almost brown
  6. Add cooked noodles
  7. Stir until it’s hard to tell noodle from vegetable
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste
